Some of the great works of the last hundred years have been re-workings of epic poems from cultures around the world. Professor of Classics Emily Greenwood leads a conversation about the ways in which a poet, a novelist, and a playwright have returned to ancient sources to write thoroughly contemporary works.

Emily Greenwood, who is of British and Ugandan heritage, is Professor of Classics and Chair of the Classics department at Yale. She specializes in ancient Greek prose literature and adaptations of Greek and Roman classics in postcolonial literatures. Recent publications include essays on Cy Twombly’s adaptation of the Iliad via Pope, and bardic personae in the poetry of Simon Armitage and Alice Oswald.
