In her 2014 essay “Delusions of Whiteness in the Avant-Garde” Cathy Park Hong writes, “to encounter the history of avant-garde poetry is to encounter a racist tradition.” Professor Tavia Nyong'o explores this problem in a conversation with Hong and John Keene.
Tavia Nyong’o teaches performance studies at Yale, where he is Professor of American Studies, African American Studies, and Theater Studies. His books include The Amalgamation Waltz: Race, Performance, and the Ruses of Memory (University of Minnesota Press, 2009) and Afro-Fabulations: The Queer Drama of Black Life (New York University Press, 2018). He is currently writing a study of the writer Samuel R. Delany.
