Brother and Sister (2022): Film Screening
In Brother and Sister, Arnaud Desplechin’s 2022 film, a dreadful accident brings two estranged siblings back into each other's lives. Alice (Marion Cotillard) is an actress who for ten years has hated her brother Louis (Melvil Poupaud), a writer. Desplechin has described their haine as a nightmare they have to wake up from. It is all, in many ways, absurd: Alice and Louis are histrionic; their situation is a maelstrom.
Following the screening, Gwendoline Riley, a long-time fan of Desplechin, will be in conversation with her friend, the award-winning comedian Elf Lyons, whose latest show, The Woman on The Edge, explores similar themes. Their conversation will touch on melodrama, mania, and how to write and think about the mysteries of enmity and attachment.
