How to balance the life of the artist with the artist's work? Langdon Hammer, one of America's most distinguished literary biographers, talks with Olivia Laing, John Keene, and Sarah Bakewellabout how they answered this question in their own works of both fiction and nonfiction.

Langdon Hammer is Niel Gray, Jr. Professor of English and Chair of Yale's English Department. His James Merrill: Life and Art, a biography, was published in 2015. He is now working on a biography of Elizabeth Bishop.
