The Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library owns Alexander Pope’s annotated copy of the ﬁrst English translation of French writer and philosopher Michel de Montaigne's Essais. Curator Kathryn James talks with Sarah Bakewell about Montaigne, Pope, and Bakewell’s “singular and spirited” biography of Montaigne, How to Live.
Kathryn James is the Curator for Early Modern Books and Manuscripts at the Beinecke Library and a Lecturer in the Yale History Department. She organizes the Yale Program in the History of the Book and was recently the Munby Fellow in Bibliography at the University of Cambridge. She is working on a book called Imperfect: Love, Trust, and Manuscript Culture in Early Modern England.
