Close Looking: Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi on William Etty

A chance encounter with William Etty’s 1837 painting The Sirens and Ulysses at a museum in her hometown of Manchester, England inspired Jennifer Makumbi’s current novel-in-progress. Kate Ezra engages Makumbi in a conversation about her complex relationship with Etty’s work.

Kate Ezra was Nolen Curator of Education and Academic Affairs at the Yale University Art Gallery until her retirement in 2015. Previously she was professor of art history at Columbia College Chicago and associate curator of African art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. She is the author of Royal Art of Benin: The Perls Collection (1992), Art of the Dogon: Selections from the Lester Wunderman Collection (1988), and A Human Ideal in African Art: Bamana Figurative Sculpture (1986). She received her Ph.D. in African art history from Northwestern University.
